William Gaddis. Never mind why! But I got to the end and I was like, "Huh, there was no
owl in it, that's weird, because
every book has an owl in it." Reading J R was like swimming in an exhilarating icy rushing river of dialogue but you know the words went whirling by so fast maybe I missed a few. So I cheated and did a "
Google Book Search" of it and yes indeed, I had missed an allusion to "Woody Owl," by which Gaddis seemed to mean "Woodsy Owl," the
1970s anti-pollution mascot. So okay so J R has an owl in it. So I feel better.
