In the same passage from her diary of the year 1616, Anne Clifford reflects on how her husband is hanging out in bowling alleys while she is at home with a "sorrowful and heavy heart" trying to take care of serious financial matters. Bowling alleys! That's a direct quotation. Except for the exclamation point. Did you know they had bowling alleys in 1616? I'm not going to look into it.
