I Must Have Pickles, He Said

Brief but interesting pickle editorial in the New York Times. Made me want to read more by the author, Jane Ziegelman. Did you know that pickles were once seen as corruptive by "the man," like cigarettes and whiskey? Remember that the next time "the man" tells you what to do! And now I want a "whole pickled cabbage." To stop innocent children from eating pickles, the New York City educational authorities fed them a proper breakfast of "creamed fish and apple sauce." Well, now I have reproduced almost the entire editorial. I'll leave you with this, from a concerned early 20th century sociologist: "One lad of 10 said that he always bought pickles with his three cents. ‘I must have pickles,’ he said."
